Volunteer Update

July 29, 2020

Dear St. Mary’s Medical Center Auxiliary,

I wanted to update you about the St. Mary’s Medical Center volunteer program and some of the changes that are happening this week.

As you may have heard, a total of 64 positions were effected at both Cabell and St. Mary’s in the last month. None of the eliminated positions provide direct patient care. The positions were among leadership and furloughed positions and many have been offered other opportunities within our system. These difficult but necessary decisions were driven by the impact of COVID-19 and the reduced volumes we have had since reopening in May.

I am pleased to announce that as part of integrating Mountain Health Network services on both campuses, volunteer services will now be managed by Julie Neal. She will be supported by Lauren Francis, who most recently served as the Foundation offices secretary and will now help coordinate volunteers at both hospitals.  In addition to this change, Kim Chambers who currently operates the gift shop for the Auxiliary at Cabell will now be responsible for all gift shops operating on properties owned by the system.  St. Mary’s Gift Shop staff will report to Kim moving forward.

What does this staffing change mean for you? Beginning Monday, August 3, your point of contact for volunteer assignments, time management, and other volunteer questions will be either Julie or Lauren.   The volunteer offices will continue to be located in the current space at both locations.  Lauren’s phone number is 304.399.4686. Julie’s phone number is 304.526.1400.  Julie and Lauren both have a true passion for volunteering and are looking forward to working with you.

Like you, I have tremendous confidence in Julie Neal.  I think, with your help, you will find she will be able to smoothly work Kim and Lauren into their new roles.  In the end, these changes will allow the volunteers at St. Mary’s to continue to help the hospital as they have done before.

As part of these overall changes, the Auxiliaries and Volunteer Programs at both hospitals will be reporting to me.  My goal is to make sure every volunteer feels connected to his/her hospital and the Mountain Health System and to see all our programs grow and thrive.  Please feel free to contact me at 304.526.2658 if you have any questions. I look forward to working with and meeting you at the next luncheon which should be announced in the coming weeks.

We recognize the COVID-19 pandemic has created difficulties and uncertainties for everyone. Please know that we value you and all you invest in St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Sincerely,

Bradley Burck, MA
